Creating A Garden Of Your Own

By: Annie Deakin

Have you ever noticed just how relaxing a garden in the yard can be? It seems as if every person out there enjoys sitting in a garden in their yard as they enjoy what good old Mother Nature has to offer. Gardens show us just how great Mother Nature can be to us. Garden creations are more than just vegetables. Creating a personal space to reflect and enjoy nature is something that should be fun. Maybe work is stressful and a place to unwind is needed. There might be the desire to have a place to watch nature or read a book in peace. It doesn't matter what the reason may be, gardens have many purposes and are easy to construct.

Choosing a Spot - The first part of garden creation is location. Vegetable gardens thrive off of sunlight, many herbs like sun or shade, and rocks aren't picky at all. Once the type of garden has been decided, it will make finding a place for it easier. If it is to be a place for relaxing, try to avoid making it in a high-traffic area; this sort of defeats the purpose. Gardens consisting of many plants is easier to maintain with a water source nearby.

Finding the Equipment - Tools for creating a garden might include; a rake, hoe, tree trimmers, scissors, shovel, gloves, buckets, wheelbarrow, or backhoe. It depends on how extensive the garden is going to be in creation.

If large equipment is needed, there are many rental places in cities for this purpose. There's no need in shelling out large amounts of money if it isn't required. Many neighbors are more than willing to share tools as well.

Readying the Area - The area will have to be made ready before plants are purchased, this way, plants can be put in the ground as soon as they are brought home. Remove any unwanted rocks, boulders, stumps, or plants. Grass is easily removed by using a shovel to scrape the top layer off. Dig down with a flat-edged shovel, about two inches below the grass line, and push horizontally across the ground. Sheets of sod will usually come off easily.

Plant Collecting - Plants can range from free to expensive. The free ones are found in the backyard or given away by the neighbors. There are farmers' markets during the summer with a variety of vegetable and herb plants. Hardware stores and nurseries have high-end plants as well as excellent plant sales at the end of the season. Just make sure they are healthy and water them thoroughly after planting.

Little Add-Ons - Placing a little walkway through the center of the garden, can make it easier to maintain weeds. If a chair is going to be put in the garden, but the ground is a little uneven, some bricks can be set for a small patio. Some people also enjoy placing ceramic figurines or birdbaths in gardens. It is all about personal style.

Enjoying Your Creation - This is the best part of creating a garden of your own, getting the chance to use it!
